Microsoft was able to achieve this astonishing reversal thanks to ruthless pruning of old and obsolete code, but also thanks to a new generation of programming tools designed in part to produce more compact code that is also highly secure and reliable.īecause Windows 7 offers so many improvements and new features compared to Windows Vista, XP, 9 x, Me, and 2000, in this section, we highlight some of its new and improved features and what each feature does. That’s about 12% more code than Windows XP, but about 10% less code than its immediate predecessor, Windows Vista.įor the first time ever, Windows 7 features a code base smaller than the code base in the preceding version. How big a change is Windows 7? Estimates are that by the time it was released, it contained about 50 million lines of code. But of course, Vista also upped the Windows security ante considerably, and introduced the slick, animated Aero interface, which are also part of Windows 7 as well. Furthermore, in its Ultimate and Home versions, Windows 7 supports Media Center. Although Windows 7 is a much-improved version of the Windows XP family, preserving many of Windows XP’s corporate networking and security features, it also carries many multimedia capabilities from Vista, including support for digital projectors, slideshows, movie making, and DVD burning. The jump from Windows Vista to Windows 7 is more of an incremental leap (like the jump from Windows 95 to 98), but it brings significant improvements and many changes.
